Further to the last post, J B Priestley is reported to have said:
“To show a child what once delighted you, to find the child’s delight added to your own – that is happiness”
Now I don’t believe that the same calculus applies to misery, but it is to say that there is a curious delight in this kind of pain. Sports fans will understand. There is therefore, a fatherly responsibility to initiate my son into this stuff. This is what it’s all about my boy, life can’t be all Chelsea or Arsenal or Liverpool. He needs to support Leeds to appreciate life to its fullest. So there was a joy even in sharing with him the torture of watching my team toil up and down a football pitch.
Was I happy at the final whistle? In a strange way, yes!
The rest of you who find this unfathomable, well, let’s just accept that it takes all sorts…
