Beginnings in Genesis – from heaven to earth
The whole of the chapter describes a move from the heavens to the earth or from God to his creation, thus setting up a powerful symmetry. Henri Blocher describes the sequence of days in two triads:
Day 1 creates light Day 4 the luminaries
Day 2 creates sky Day 5 birds and fish
Day 3 creates land Day 6 animals and humankind
He also summarises other organising principles
Days 1-3 Days 4-6
Works of separation works of adornment
Demarcation of spaces peopling of spaces
Immobile creation mobile creation
Habitations inhabitants
Tohu bohu
(2:1)Thus the heavens and
earth were formed and all the host of them
The whole things climaxes in the Sabbath.
